Gender statistics for agriculture and rural areas will be the focus of a regional seminar that opens in Almaty, Kazakhstan today, with 12 countries of Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia participating.

The objective of the two-day event – organised by FAO in close collaboration with the Committee on Statistics of the Ministry of National Economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan – is to exchange knowledge, information and good practices in the production and use of gender statistics in the participating countries. Officials from national statistical services and Ministries of Agriculture are attending.

“We expect that the seminar will generate ideas and recommendations to help build capacities in statistics that are sensitive to the needs of the most disadvantaged groups of population,” said FAO gender expert Dono Abdurazakova.

“As available data demonstrate, these groups often reside in rural areas or are engaged in agricultural sector.”

The results of an FAO study, carried out under a project financed by the Government of Turkey, will be presented. The project, entitled 'Strengthening national capacities for production and analysis of sex- disaggregated data through the implementation of the FAO Gender and Agriculture Framework,' concluded with a workshop held last month in Istanbul, attended by delegations from the three beneficiary countries (Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkey).

Also attending this week’s seminar are representatives of Turkey’s Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock.
