26/03/2015: Great news for Tanzanian maize farmers


Tanzania may soon start exporting maize to China in a move that is likely to become a major catalyst in the country's agricultural production, All Africa reports.

The move would also lift the welfare of millions of farmers who have for long been languishing in poverty despite registering bumper harvest of various crops including maize, rice and cassava.

In the regions known as the country's major bread baskets -- Iringa, Katavi, Kigoma, Mbeya, Morogoro, Rukwa and Ruvuma - it is common to witness mountains of bags of maize and paddy rotting in villages for lack of markets.

The report that China, a nation with a population of over 1.3 billion, would soon start buying maize from Tanzania is quite exciting and a cause for great celebration. During President Jakaya Kikwete's visit to China last year, the populous far-eastern nation showed interest in buying up to one million tonnes of maize.

The Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Mr Uledi Mussa, told the Daily News in an interview recently that a draft contract to that effect was presented to the Chinese embassy in Tanzania over a month ago.
