09/12/2014: Australia donates 800 tonnes of rice for 'Ruby' aid

The Australian government is donating 800 tonnes of rice to support families in the Phillippines affected by Typhoon Ruby, ABS-CBN News reports.

In a statement, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said the Australian government is providing rice delivered through Australia's prepositioned stores with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

It said the Australian government deployed officials to areas affected by the storm to further assess the damage and to coordinate any further Australian consular and humanitarian assistance.

"Australia is a good friend of the Philippines and stands ready to help as required," Bishop said in a statement.

Australian Ambassador Bill Tweddell, meanwhile, said food for typhoon-affected Filipinos is a priority for the Philippine government "and Australia's contribution supports that urgent need.”

He said that the Australian aid program in the Philippines placed a high priority on supporting disaster preparedness.

"The Philippines is affected by strong typhoons every year and the Australian Government understands that humanitarian assistance is only one part of a comprehensive typhoon response. Australia's aid program focuses on reducing disaster risk and enhancing disaster preparedness across the country to make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable Filipinos. We work with Philippine Government agencies, civil society partners and international humanitarian organisations to promote resilience at the community level." he added.
