08/02/13: Rice-fish farming; grant for sorgum gene research; silos video

Silos Cordoba have been busy in Kazakhstan. Check out this video of the company's recent modernisation of grain storage facilities 'Tonkeris' in Kazakhstan.

Integrated rice-fish farming is the need of the hour says, the Financial Express, Bangladesh. Although rice production is well-established in the country, fish farming lags behind. However, around 10.14 million hectares of rice fields, there is scope to integrate fish production and rice farming. In addition to increasing fish production, combined rice-fish production can also improve productivity and profitability of rice farming.

Three scientists at Purdue University, USA  have been awarded a $1 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to develop genomic tools to improve sorghum. The aim of the research is  to identify sorghum gene functions, especially those that play a role in crop yield, protein and starch digestion, and disease resistance.
